American actress Sydney Sweeney recently made a stand against online cruelty regarding her bikini photos. She took to the social media platform Instagram, tearfully sharing her experience with online trolls who had made harsh remarks about her bikini pictures.

The “Euphoria” star narrated her ordeal via a live session, where she mentioned that a trend on Twitter was making fun of her appearance. “I think a lot about people’s feelings… And I saw that there were a bunch of photos, paparazzi photos, of me in a bikini. And I think it’s really important for people to see how words actually affect people,” said the actress.

Sweeney is not the only public figure who is raising her voice against the unfavourable comments made on social media platforms. This incident has drawn attention to the increasing problem of online bullying, a concern that has previously been highlighted by other celebrities as well.

Likewise, the media discussions about celebrities’ physical appearance and the impact of those discussions is an ongoing conversation. Previously, singer Billie Eilish spoke on the subject, expressing her disdain for society’s scrutiny of women’s bodies. Reality television star Khloé Kardashian similarly faced criticisms and jabs online about her appearance, pushing her to defend herself and make a public statement about body image and self respect.

Despite the existing awareness of the issue, the continuing occurrences of online abuse towards celebrities and the scrutiny of their physical appearance further indicate a pressing need to rethink our social media interactions and the way we view women’s bodies in the media.
