The art education community is celebrating distinguished talents from the Klein Independent School District (KISD). An art educator alongside his exceptional students from KISD has recently been honored for their accomplishments.

Klein Collins High School art teacher, Matthew Friesen, was bestowed the “Art Educator of the Year” award by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA). This accolade acknowledges his dedication and significant contributions to the field of art education. Friesen has been developing his craft in the district for the past 12 years.

Friesen’s students also gained recognition for their artistic talents. KCHS students, Lorentz Grimsgaard and Gisselle Cervantez, garnered special honours. Grimsgaard was awarded the “Distinguished Student of the Year”, while Cervantez earned the “Yardstick Portfolio Scholarship.”

The “Yardstick Portfolio Scholarship” competition entailed students submitting a curated portfolio consisting of eight to ten works. The pieces demonstrated their proficiency and passion for art. Cervantez excelled in this competition, showing an impressive repertoire of skills and creativity.

TAEA awards play a significant role in encouraging educators and students alike in their pursuit of artistic excellence. They have been recognizing inspiring talents in Texas’s art education scene for several decades now.

Students and educators from KISD continue to showcase their skills and achievements nationally. The district’s art education program has consistently driven students towards creative excellence and has helped cement its reputation for producing some of the brightest talents in the field.
