Frank Chopp, the former Speaker of the House in Washington state, was posthumously recognized for his relentless optimism and unwavering belief in the realm of the possible. Throughout his political career, his colleagues frequently noted that for Chopp, nothing was ever viewed as impossible.
Chopp, a long-time Seattle Democrat, was a familiar figure in Olympia for over two decades. He was first elected to the state house in 1994 and held the speakership from 1999 until 2019, making him the longest serving Speaker in state history.
His tenacious determination and ability to drive progressive legislation were often highlighted. Colleague and friend Larry Springer, a Democratic representative from Kirkland, stated “Frank could always see a path to ‘yes’. Even if there didn’t appear to be a path, he would find one or make one.”
Chopp’s leadership was instrumental in the passage of significant legislation that left a lasting impact on the state. This included policies such as the minimum wage increase and the recent paid family leave act. His concern for the rights and wellbeing of Washington’s citizens was a cornerstone to his political approach.
His enduring commitment to public service extended beyond the political arena. Outside the statehouse, Chopp was actively involved in housing advocacy work for the underprivileged. He played a pivotal role in Seattle’s Low Income Housing Institute, serving as its executive director for a number of years.
