The New Mexico State Police have reported multiple vehicle collisions due to a dust storm that swept across numerous highways. The severe weather condition has caused significant disruptions to vehicular movement within the southwestern state.
The dust storm, which began early on January 15, reduced visibility significantly, posing a significant risk to drivers. Consequently, this has triggered numerous crashes on highways throughout the state, authorities have reported.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation was dispatched across various affected areas to manage the situation. They have issued warning advisories to motorists, urging them to exercise extreme caution especially during nighttime hours when visibility is further lessened.
The authorities also encouraged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel and, if possible, to delay their schedules until the weather optimizes. Those who absolutely have to travel were advised to use headlights, slow down, and ensure there was enough space between vehicles.
Separately, the National Weather Service reported that gusty winds, up to 50 mph, significantly contributed to the dust storm. These weather conditions are not uncommon in New Mexico and can stir up dust storms, particularly in desert areas.
As of now, no fatalities have been reported, but several injuries have resulted from the various collisions. The affected highways remain partially closed while the highway patrol and other emergency services continue to manage the scene.
Local news stations continue to deliver updates, with weather forecasts predicting that this dust storm may persist for a few more days. Motorists are advised to follow the updates from official sources and heed travel advisories for their own safety [1].
