His Highness, the Aga Khan IV, globally recognised as a spiritual guide and successful entrepreneur, was born in the year 1936 and recently passed away in 2025. The Aga Khan, who is the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, has been known to promote social development in areas such as health, education, and culture throughout his lifetime.

As noted by the The Ismaili community, the Aga Khan demonstrated deep commitment to improving living conditions and opportunities for his followers as well as other communities. In the year 1967, he created the Aga Khan Development Network, an entity addressing complex development issues in various regions worldwide.

Aside from his spiritual leadership, the Aga Khan’s entrepreneurial prowess was remarkable. Underlying all his actions and motivations was a persistent focus on improving quality of life and fostering environments that would help people to become self-reliant. His initiatives have positively impacted millions of people, regardless of their faith, origin or gender.

The Aga Khan was born in Geneva and raised primarily in Nairobi, studying at Le Rosey School in Switzerland before attending Harvard University. Throughout his lifetime, his philanthropic endeavours were guided by the ethical principles of Islam, particularly the responsibilities towards the less fortunate. In recognising his impactful contributions, he was bestowed with numerous honours and awards, including the Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India and the inaugural Adrienne Clarkson Prize for Global Citizenship.

The Aga Khan’s enduring legacy continues to shed light on his steadfast devotion to charitable activities and transformative initiatives, which have reached corners of the globe far beyond his own community. With his passing in 2025, he leaves behind a timeless ethos of compassion, improving lives, and fostering harmony and understanding amongst diverse communities.
