The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has categorized a recent ordeal concerning a recall of Lay’s Potato Chips as the highest level of risk. The FDA has issued a warning to consumers regarding certain batches of the popular snack following the discovery of an undeclared allergen in the products.

Frito-Lay, the company that manufactures Lay’s, had initially issued a voluntary recall on its Barbecue Flavored Potato Chips. In their official statement, Frito-Lay disclosed that certain 1.375 oz. and 15.25 oz. packages may contain undeclared milk ingredients, which could have serious or life-threatening implications for individuals with milk allergies or severe sensitivity to milk. The affected chips have been reported to be sold in 24 U.S. states.

The problem was initially discovered after several consumer complaints about a different flavor being packed in barbecue chip bags. Upon investigating, Frito-Lay found that a small number of bags from two different sizes of Barbecue Flavored Lay’s Potato Chips were mistakenly filled with another flavor of potato chips, which contain milk, and subsequently initiated the recall.

The FDA emphasized the severity of the situation by classifying this recall as Class I – the most serious level, denoting a situation where there is a reasonable chance of serious health problems or death. Consumers who have purchased these products are strongly advised not to consume them, especially if they have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk.

Frito-Lay is working closely with the FDA to ensure that all related products are removed from shelves promptly. Consumers who have purchased the affected items have been urged by the company to retain the packaging and contact Frito-Lay’s Consumer Relations department for a refund. Those with questions about the recall can visit FDA’s recall page or Frito-Lay’s official website for further information.

Although no adverse reactions have been reported thus far, the FDA is advocating the consumers to consult a healthcare professional if they believe they have experienced any problems that may be related to consuming these items. The concern for public health and safety remains a priority as the recall situation is being resolved.
