Harsh lake-effect snow has disrupted travel in several parts of New York, causing what can only be described as a traffic nightmare. The intense snowfall occurred due to cold air blowing over warmer lake water, a phenomenon commonly known as ‘lake-effect snow’.

The snow, falling at a rate of 2 to 4 inches per hour, has led to the closure of several major highways, including portions of I-90 and I-81. Numerous flights have also been cancelled at Buffalo Niagara International Airport and Rochester International Airport due to the hazardous weather conditions.

“There have been dozens of accidents, but thankfully no fatalities,” said Ralph Erickson, a spokesperson for the New York State Department of Transportation. “Our top priority is keeping people safe and roads clear. We urge residents to stay off the roads and to call for non-emergency road service if necessary.”

The Weather Channel meteorologist Greg Forbes further elaborated on the rare meteorological event, explaining, “Lake-effect snow mainly happens when cold, dry air passes over the warmer waters of a large body of water. In this case, that body of water is the Great Lakes. The increased moisture leads to traffic-disrupting snowfall.”

The National Weather Service has issued a lake-effect snow warning for parts of upstate New York, advising residents to expect heavy snow, hazardous driving conditions, and potential power outages for the next several hours. According to their forecast, the regions will experience another 6 to 12 inches of snow, adding to the already substantial accumulation.

Local emergency services remain on high alert as they continue their efforts to cope with the extraordinary snowfall. The New York State police, alongside local city and county officials, are on standby, ready to respond to any crises that may arise in light of this freak weather event.

The major snowstorm warrants the public’s utmost caution, complicating travel, business, and daily life exponentially. Despite the strife it has caused, it once again highlights the fierce and unpredictable nature of Mother Nature.
