Whoopi Goldberg, award-winning actress and co-host of ‘The View’, recently voiced her support for Carrie Underwood’s decision to perform at the inauguration of Donald Trump. This marked Goldberg’s move towards defense on this controversial issue.
The topic sparked a heated discussion on ‘The View’, where Goldberg’s co-host Joy Behar expressed her disapproval for any artist who chose to perform for Trump. In response, Goldberg affirmed that it was primarily about the office position rather than the person holding it. “You don’t necessarily want to sing there, but it’s for the people, not for the man,” she said.
Behar suggested boycotting the event but Goldberg emphasized the need for unity and solidarity in these circumstances. She stated, “Whether you like him or not, he is the president.” Goldberg indicates that the respect conferred to the office transcends personal feelings towards the incumbent.
This isn’t the first time Goldberg has defended controversial positions. In July 2009, she supported the decision by the White House to invite country singer Toby Keith, despite the criticism he faced for his patriotic anthems post the 9/11 attacks. Goldberg has always stressed the importance of respect for the office of the president, regardless of who holds it.
The public’s reaction to Underwood’s decision to perform at the inauguration has been mixed. Regardless, she joins a list of stars including Lee Greenwood, Toby Keith, and 3 Doors Down who also performed at the inauguration.
