The acclaimed actor and comedian Jerry Seinfeld has recounted feeling terrified by one particular cameo that he experienced during the legendary sitcom bearing his name, “Seinfeld”.
Seinfeld disclosed his feelings during a conversation with comedian and actor Jason Alexander, who portrayed George Costanza on the show. The discussion was featured on the 11th season podcast – The SmartLess – hosted by fellow comedic talents Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. Seinfeld shared that it was when Keith Hernandez, renowned ex-New York Mets baseball player, made his appearance as a guest star in the “Seinfeld” sitcom.
As a self-professed fan of baseball, Seinfeld found himself feeling starstruck during Hernandez’s appearance. He was both amazed and petrified by the athlete, appearing in his show as himself in 1992, during the sitcom’s third season. Hernandez was not only a sports star but also a skillful actor, effortlessly bringing his sportsman’s charm and acting prowess to the sitcom.
Seinfeld said, “I was very scared when Keith Hernandez was on the show. Keith was a tremendous guest star. An incredible athlete—just a great, great baseball player. And he’s acting in the show, and I’m going to have to act with him.”
Hernandez took part in the two-part episode “The Boyfriend,” which entailed a fabricated story about the player helping move Jerry’s furniture, leading to the iconic line, “I’m Keith Hernandez.” Despite his initial apprehension, it became one of the most memorable episodes of the show, enhancing its reputation for featuring unique and unexpected cameo appearances.
