Kitty Dukakis, known for her advocacy work and open sharing of personal struggles, has passed away at the age of 88.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Dukakis remained an ardent advocate, her work encompassing several areas of public importance. She was not only the former first lady of Massachusetts but also vigorously worked for causes dear to her heart, using her platform to bring about significant change.

Her tenacity is perhaps most evident in the openness with which she discussed her own struggles, particularly with addiction. Mrs. Dukakis’ battles with alcoholism were well-documented, and she utilized her experiences to champion the cause of substance abuse treatment and mental health support.

In 1990, Mrs. Dukakis published a memoir, “Now You Know”, in which she shared her journey of addiction recovery. She used this publication to promote public discussions on addiction, which at the time, were often shrouded in silence and stigma.

Apart from her work in mental health, Mrs. Dukakis also campaigned fervently for removing landmines from areas of conflict globally. She rallied support and raised funds for this cause, even traveling to removal sites around the world.

The late Mrs. Dukakis, wife of 1988 Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis, has left a lasting legacy of public service and advocacy. Her enduring dedication to her causes was reflected in her continuation of public appearances and speeches, even in her later years.

Michael Dukakis, in expressing sorrow over the loss of his wife, stated, “She was a remarkable woman and I will miss her enormously”.
