Javier Tebas, the boss of Spain’s La Liga, has officially reported Manchester City to the European Commission. The complaint is in regards to the English club’s spending and its potential breaching of financial fair play regulations.

There was no immediate comment from Manchester City regarding the charges brought against them by Tebas, whose criticism of City’s practices is not new. Despite Manchester City’s unwavering stance in declaring their financial propriety, Tebas has consistently voiced concerns over the substantial financial backing the club receives from its Abu Dhabi-based owners.

In his declaration, the La Liga boss discloses allegations of Manchester City manipulating sponsor agreements permitting an overstep of the spending limit in place. The allegations, if confirmed, could potentially cause various sanctions against the club, including possible exclusion from certain tournaments.

This isn’t the first time that the Spanish official has lodged a complaint against Manchester City. He has been critical of the club’s financial conduct on various occasions in the past. As well as Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), the French football powerhouse, has also been subject to Tebas’s scrutiny under similar circumstances.

Such allegations have been made in a football context where financial fair play has become increasingly critical. Time will tell what actions, if any, the European Commission will take in regards to the complaint lodged against Manchester City by La Liga’s boss.
