The Girl Scouts of the USA has felt the need to defend its cookies amidst an ongoing kerfuffle concerning the ingredients, which some critics claim may be harmful. The controversy has been fuelled by environmental activist groups who question the safety of the ingredients used in the popular treats.

This is not the first time that the organization has faced backlash regarding its beloved cookies. In the past, they came under fire for using palm oil, an ingredient linked to deforestation and the displacement of indigenous people. Despite the palm oil controversy, Girl Scouts maintained that the usage of such ingredients was under strict certification bodies like the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil.

The current controversy commenced when two environmental advocacy organizations, Rainforest Action Network (RAN) and The Center for Biological Diversity, referred to certain ingredients as potentially ‘toxic’. The alleged risky ingredients primarily encompass synthetic food dyes and high-fructose corn syrup. Critics suggest that these additives may pose health risks.

In response to the allegations, the Girl Scouts rejected the notion that any of the ingredients used were harmful. They assured consumers that food safety and quality were their top priorities, with all cookies meeting FDA requirements. “We’re very proud of our safety record and commitment to transparency”, said a Girl Scouts spokesperson.

Despite the ongoing debate, public sentiment towards the traditional treats appears to remain largely positive. Sales of Girl Scout cookies, which help fund the organization’s education and empowerment programs for millions of girls worldwide, continue to be robust. As the organization looks to weather this present storm, it continues to maintain the steadfast belief that their cookies not only taste good, but are also safe to consume.
