A new exhibit honoring Andrew Young has recently been unveiled in Lawrenceville. The former U.S. ambassador to the UN, whose contributions to civil rights were significant, is the focus of the latest addition to Lawrenceville’s cultural scene.

This exhibition, which formally opened to the public on November 20, displays Young’s life and accomplishments. As a mayor, congressman, and humanitarian, Young played a pivotal role both locally and globally. Often assisting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his aim was to promote and assure human rights for all.

This comprehensive presentation was made possible in partnership with the Andrew J. Young Foundation. Along with documenting his life and work, the exhibition features Young’s personal artifacts such as letters, documents, photographs and film footage, providing an intimate glimpse into his illustrious career.

Along with his contributions to the civil rights movement, Young’s stewardship of the city of Atlanta is highlighted in the exhibition. His tenure as mayor saw the city’s transformation into an international city, attracting major events like the Summer Olympics in 1996.

Carolyn Bourdeaux, the U.S. representative for Georgia’s 7th congressional district, which includes Lawrenceville, expressed her admiration for Young at the opening ceremony. “Andrew Young’s impact on our community, our state, and indeed, on our country and the world, cannot be overstated,” said Bourdeaux.

A visit to the Andrew Young exhibit in Lawrenceville not only offers insight into the life of a significant historical figure but also encourages reflection on the importance of social justice and equality.
