The NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard, Anthony Edwards recently shone his light of insight into the game. Specifically, if he had the authority to make any changes to the league, he revealed that he would modify the current technical foul rule, commonly known as ‘the techs’.
In the conversation with reporters, the athlete explained that under his hypothetical commission, the rule stipulating the need for two technical fouls for an automatic ejection from the game would be revised. According to the current rule, a player who commits two technical fouls in a game is automatically ejected. As per Edwards, this rule is too harsh on the players.
Edwards evoked an emphatic tone, expressing, “If I was the commissioner for a little bit, I’d say you’ve gotta get like three or four techs to get kicked out. Two is too short, man.”. The sentiments of the twenty-year-old rookie reflect the concerns of several other players and critics who argue that the rule is too punitive and interferes with the game flow. Over the past few seasons, there has been an increasing number of technical fouls and the subsequent ejections have caused a commotion in the world of NBA.
The issue also pertains to players such as the Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green who, earlier in February, got tossed out of a game against the Charlotte Hornets following a double technical foul. This incident raised quite a stir, furthering the discourse on the nature of ‘the techs’.
The current NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver, however, has yet to express his thoughts on the matter, thus maintaining the status quo for the time being.
