Approximately 200 million people across 40 states in the United States may experience significant snowfall due to a succession of three winter storms this week. The impending triple storm event, as forecasted by leading weather experts, could potentially cause significant disruptions over an extensive geographical reach.
The initial storm had already begun its journey from the Pacific Northwest on Monday, with its trajectory set to cut through the Midwest by Tuesday. Following this, the subsequent storm count is set to escalate quickly, with the second storm hot on the heels of the first, expected to hit around the middle of the week. The third winter storm is projected to brew from the Southwest, eventually impacting large parts of the country towards the latter part of the week.
The snowfall these storms bring has the potential to blanket highways and urban centres from coast to coast with sub-zero weather conditions. The severity of the situation is heightened by chilling winds accompanying the snow, making for treacherous travel conditions.
“We could see travel disruptions due to snow stretching from Washington to Atlanta,” warns a top meteorologist at AccuWeather. He added that it is feasible to have a few spots reaching a foot or more of cumulative snowfall by the end of the week.
A note of caution has also been highlighted for the Tennessee Valley, parts of which could experience a flash freeze event, thus leading to hazardous road conditions. A “flash freeze” occurs when temperatures drop rapidly, causing any water or slush on the ground to freeze instantly.
This trio of storms is set to add to an already complicated winter for millions. As such, residents are urged to remain wary and prepared for the chilling weeks ahead.
