Bolivia has been severely hit by the seasonal rains, which have resulted in 18 deaths and affected approximately 50,000 families. The country has faced copious rainfall, leading to increased flooding and landslides, as per the local authorities.

This devastating information has been shared by Defence Minister Edmundo Novillo, who also highlighted the dire impacts such hazards have on the daily lives of the community and economy. “We have a report of 18 deceased people and nearly 50,000 affected families throughout the country,” Novillo said.

A high number of affected families have been reported in municipalities that are traditionally susceptible to torrential rains. This includes the regions of Beni, La Paz, Pando and Santa Cruz, where swift responses have been initiated by the authorities.

Besides affecting human lives, the disastrous conditions have caused immense financial losses. Municipalities across Bolivia have reported significant damage to agricultural land, cattle and valuable infrastructure. Bearing the brunt are regions like Cochabamba, Oruro and Potosi, where a high percentage of the population contributes to the country’s agriculture sector.

Government officials continue to monitor the situation closely, while strengthening their emergency responses and preparedness to ease the plight of affected families. Efforts to deepen scientific understanding of weather patterns and develop comprehensive, proactive flood and landslide-prevention mechanisms are also underway.

Even in the face of adversity, the resilience of Bolivian people and their solidarity in providing assistance to their neighbors become apparent. The government assures the public of all possible support and appeals to maintain all necessary precautions in the wake of the seasonal rain period.
