Elon Musk, the tech mogul and founder of SpaceX, has announced plans to provide WiFi to areas affected by wildfires using Starlink satellites and Cybertrucks. In a tweet on October 2, Musk committed to deploying Starlink, his ambitious satellite internet project, and a fleet of hi-tech Cybertrucks to bolster communication capabilities in devastated regions.
Starlink, a constellation of small, low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, is designed to deliver high-speed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable. The project comes from SpaceX, the aerospace company Musk founded in 2002. Currently, over 700 Starlink satellites are in orbit, with plans to eventually launch a constellation of about 42,000.
The electric-powered Cybertruck, another Musk creation, will provide the necessary on-the-ground infrastructure for the WiFi network. Conceived and developed by Tesla, Musk’s electric vehicle company, Cybertrucks are touted for their robustness, which could prove critical in disaster-stricken areas.
The move follows Musk’s public commitment to assist with wildfire recovery. This initiative is part of a broader effort to utilize SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service in places that need it most, such as remote areas or regions affected by natural disasters.
His announcement drew mixed reactions from the public. Some praised the initiative as a game-changing approach to disaster recovery, while others viewed it with skepticism, citing concerns over internet privacy and the potential for monopolization of space.
