TikTok, a popular short-form video sharing app, may face a ban from platform stores as early as this month. In the event of such a ban, users would encounter some potentially drastic changes to their social media landscape. Nevertheless, there are actions that existing users can take in preparation for this possible outcome.
A potential ban on TikTok can be attributed to growing concerns over national security and data privacy. International tension between the United States and China, where TikTok’s parent company ByteDance is headquartered, has stimulated much of this anxiety. Previous actions such as the U.S. military banning use of the app on government-issued devices have further raised flags.
The future of TikTok remains uncertain as discussions continue between ByteDance and potential buyers of the app, such as Microsoft and Oracle. Notably, a deal could result in the app being spared from being eliminated from app stores in the U.S.
In preparation for a possible ban, existing TikTok users could choose to download their favourite videos which includes their own content and other users’ videos for offline viewing. To perform downloads, users have to click on the “Share” button on the video and then tap the “Save Video” button.
A possible shift to a different platform is another contingency that could be considered. Alternative apps offering similar short-form video sharing features, like Byte and Triller, already exist, and users may opt to migrate there. Both of these platforms have experienced significant user increases since talks of a TikTok ban began.
Despite the array of potential solutions, the impact of a TikTok ban on users would be substantial. The platform has cultivated a unique community that could not be easily duplicated on different apps. Additionally, the reach that creators have on TikTok is significant, and a ban could disrupt their ability to connect with audiences and share content.
The proactive approach being taken by some TikTok users in anticipation of the ban suggests not only their loyalty to the unique platform, but also their adaptability in shifting landscapes of the social media sphere. As the impending situation develops, the response of global TikTok users will be closely watched.
