U.S. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, has returned to Congress after undergoing a successful hip replacement surgery. Pelosi, known for her distinctive style particularly highlighted by her trademark stiletto heels, made her first appearance post-operation sans her signature footwear.
Her office confirmed that the 81-year-old House Speaker had the procedure on her hip on November 12, in order to resolve issues stemming from a condition known as osteoarthritis. Pelosi was expected to recover quickly and bounce back to her role due to her otherwise robust health.
Given the physical demands post-surgery, Pelosi opted for more practical footwear instead of her go-to heels. For her first day back at work, Pelosi chose a pair of sensible flats, making a slightly noticeable departure from her characteristic style.
Despite the change in shoe preference, Pelosi seemed undeterred and driven to resume her duties. “Her physicians confirm she is recovering splendidly and looks forward to being able to directly participate in proceedings in the near future,” a statement from her office reads.
Even as she recovers from the surgery, Pelosi has kept up with her responsibilities, participating in committee calls and conducting important legislative business from her home.
While it is unknown when Pelosi will return to her trademark stilettos, her high-spirited return to Congress emphasises her dedication to her work irrespective of personal challenges.
Pelosi is a strong advocate of women’s rights and has been a dominant political leader for more than three decades. Her personal style, particularly, her stiletto heels, has remained a constant addition to her powerful presence.
