Former Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Tom Homan, has made a strong argument supporting the idea that a secure border saves lives. Citing multiple facts and figures, he has highlighted the need for stronger border controls.
According to Homan, the lack of a secure border has led to thousands of criminal offenses in the United States line-up. He notes an increase in human trafficking, narcotics trafficking, and associated violent crimes traced back to illegal border crossings.
In statistical terms, Homan quoted a surprising amount of data. He revealed that, from 2010 to 2014, among illegal immigrants, there were notably 4,000 homicides, 30,000 sex crimes, and over 100,000 violent assaults noted in the United States. Homan believes these numbers could be drastically reduced or avoided altogether with secure border operations.
Homan stated emphatically, “We got to secure the border to save lives.”. He cited cases of people dying from heat exhaustion, dehydration, or even being abandoned by traffickers in the deserts as a result of their arduous journey. In that context, a secure border could aid in decreasing these human tragedies, said Homan.
Summing up his perspective, Homan said, “A secure border is a compassionate border.” He maintains that proper immigration laws and border controls can reduce crime and save lives, ultimately leading to societal and humanitarian benefits.
