A manatee that was rescued from a canal in Mobile, Alabama is reported to be in recovery at SeaWorld Orlando.

The mammal was found stranded in the narrow, shallow canal with no clear route to escape. After being notified, a team from Dauphin Island Sea Lab in Alabama sprang into action, conducting a detailed rescue operation.

The large aquatic mammal is known to prefer warmer water and migrates to Florida during the winter months. The fact that it was found far off its usual migratory route and in potentially dangerous conditions triggered immediate concern.

After the successful rescue operation, the sea cow was immediately transported to SeaWorld Orlando in Florida, a renowned institution for marine life rehabilitation and research. It is currently under the relentless care and attention of the facility’s highly specialized team.

The manatee, which could weigh somewhere in the region of 800 to 1,200 pounds, will remain at SeaWorld for a minimum of a few weeks, according to the experts at the facility, until it gets back its strength.

Dauphin Island Sea Lab and SeaWorld Orlando will be keeping a close eye on the animal’s progress before taking any decision regarding its future release and reintroduction into its natural habitat.
